Schaeffer IT Outsourcing Essay Schaeffer Corporation must have improved information technology services in order for them to achieve their ambitious growth goals. Schaeffer’s IT is not one of their core competencies and they are able to save some money by outsourcing and expending into additional countries and acquiring these new companies will require extraordinary IT support efforts. Schaeffer Corporation has five challenges associated with their decision to outsource. In order of priority, the first challenge is that what if there is a problem with the contract? If new situations arise that weren’t in the contract, Schaeffer is unable to renegotiate contract thereby losing lots of money in the process. This will require additional costs without additional benefits. Contract negotiations are an integral part of the purchase process because it is hard to renegotiate a contract with selected vendors (398). The project manager involved in the contract writing and negotiation steps should re-read the company’s needs and the package’s capabilities before making a major decision. Successfully implementing a packaged application requires commitment from business managers and users so having a project manager satisfy the role to manage technical aspects of implementing a package (400). Challenge number two is that if Schaeffer outsources, the data center will be in Vilona and not all employees will want to work in Vilona so this causes employees to leave Schaeffer not because they want to but because they have to. Project management can also use Schaeffer’s loyal and long time staff for certain parts of the project implementation and see what else they can do for their due to the change in outsourcing. Ten people have decided to leave for other jobs during the outsourcing decision process. IT people have been displaced by ABC employees. Outsourcing is already having an impact on the culture of the company and individuals with the best qualifications should be placed for work within the ABC Corporation as part of the outsourcing decision (418). The third challenge is that ABC Corporation has a higher cost than they stated in their RFP. Schaeffer needs to have a project budget for the total project to outsource. Cost estimations can be very complicated by many types of unknowns not in the contract including lack of precedents, unpredictable technical problems and shifting business requirements (418). Schaeffer will need a budget that has  some layaway in case of issues with cost arise. Challenge number four is that the Colbert Division does not want to outsource because it is very expensive and risky. The outsourcing decision will have risks just like every other decision but Schaeffer should look into more firms and research so that this important decision does not interfere with their planning and that no one better fits their dynamic and growing Reitzel Division. Colbert Division does not want to outsource because it is too expensive and risky for their division. Schaeffer needs to let the Colbert Division know the advantages to outsourcing all the divisions. Some advantages are the reduced need for internal IS resources because all of the resources will be based out of Vilona and that it takes less time to implement (402). The fifth problem is to outsource all of its IT operations for Reitzel but keep systems development in-house. The best plan has to be put in process in order to achieve the revenue targets. It does not seem right to only outsource some of IT’s operations while leaving some systems in-house. The appropriate long term solution is to outsource in order to accomplish their goals and have the best IT support. ABC Corporation seems to be very outstanding in providing that support that Schaeffer has mentioned in their RFP. Even though ABC Corporation seems like the perfect choice, Schaeffer should investigate ABC Corporation more with references from other corporations/firms who have used ABC Corporation before signing onto a contract (396). Schaeffer can ask all their vendors to provide a reference list as part of the RFP to make the best decision to implement for the outsource project. Schaeffer’s should not have to worry about making changing to this outsourcing decision five years from now so Schaeffer has plenty of time to research their vendors and see which one can provide the wants and needs of the corporation.

What gets rewarded gets done A Psychological and behavioral explanation The nature of human behavior is, humans do things to satisfy their unmet needs in some way or the other. These needs may vary from the very basic such as hunger to reach the greater heights of life. Whatever it may be, when he realizes that some actions he takes lead to satisfy his needs, he tends to do them in a superior way, expecting the satisfaction of his needs in a greater manner. On the other hand, if a person perceives that the things he does are unable to take him to a state of satisfied on some need or want, and then it’s obvious that he does not want to continue the same action. An activity of any kind, a person is involved in takes that person to a result. The result may or may not be desirable. That depends on the activity and the way that particular person performs that activity. The activities done by a person and the way they are done can be collectively known as the behavior. Therefore, what leads to a result is the behavior. The needed results are led by the right behavior. The right behavior here is an identified set of activities and the way they should be performed, which at the end take the person to the needed result. The two ideas: ‘need-satisfying urge of humans’ and ‘behavior leads to results’, forms the following idea. An individual may act in a certain way to satisfy his unmet needs, but that behavior brings a result, which may be satisfaction of that need itself or satisfaction of that need with something else. If that particular behavior brings some other result in addition to the need satisfaction itself, then it’s obvious that encouraging that behavior by means of ensuring greater need satisfaction yields more results. The above-discussed ideas make up the background for our topic, ‘what gets rewarded gets done’. To get done something (i.e. to achieve a result) there has to be a right behavior. Rewards can satisfy some needs of an individual encouraging the right behavior. From that we can say rewarding can lead to the needed result. Management point of view An organization is a setup of goals to be reached, and resources to be utilized in order to reach those goals. Human resource can be stated as the most important and valuable resource among all the resources possessed by an organization.

Organizational Structure Essay

The reporting structure is a very important tool in an organization. This structure is a chart that serves as a roadmap of management levels and positions. Every business has a chain of command and it is structured uniquely, depending on the organization. The structure of an organization, if not built correctly can destroy the organization just like a building with poor architecture. The blueprints clarify and build a strong foundation in which to grow or build an organization. Chipotle is a Mexican Grill Restaurant in the fast food industry that started out with one location in Colorado back in 1993. Today it has just more than 1,400 locations in the United States, Canada, England, and France. The structure of this organization has had to change and adapt to the growth of the business over time. Like a majority of businesses and organizations the vertical organizational structure is similar with multiple levels of hierarchy. At Chipotle, the top of the pyramid is fulfilled by the board of directors whom have the ultimate responsibility of making decisions for the entire company (Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. 2010). At the bottom of the pyramid there are the store managers, assistants, shift managers, and employees completing the everyday operational tasks that brings in the money. Between these two levels there are district and regional managers seeing over the many locations spread out across America and beyond. It is for this reason the horizontal organizational structure of Chipotle is divisional. A divisional structure groups units around product, customers, or geographic regi ons. Chipotle’s mission and commitment is to deliver great quality tasting food with integrity to its customers no matter where the customers are; therefore, the tasks in completing this goal do not change from store to store, district to district, or region to region. Each of these regions has the same tasks, the same levels of management within them, and the same superiors to report to in the chain of command. Dividing the organization into divisions based on the geographic region makes it possible for each region to purchase their ingredients locally and organically. This divisional structure also allows the company to evaluate and compare the regions. This divisional structure is very different from that of others. A functional structure is organized into departments according to the business functions. In this structure each department has its own expectations and responsibilities, they are not like that of any other department, so the tasks in each department are different from one another. In this type of structure each department is built with individuals that have the skills and expertise in relation to that department. All 1,400 plus Chipotle restaurants are owned by the same corporation. If this was not the case and some stores were franchised out, then a network structure would need to be created. A network organization looks for ways for tasks to be completed outside of the organization by outsourcing. A store that agrees to license contracts and franchises with the company would be responsible for delivering and completing the goals at the specific location; these business functions include management, employment, product ordering, etc. Chipotle would be cutting a lot of cost and making money by contributing little in return. This is the main reason an organization would choose a network type of structure. The responsible party for the outsource function has the power to choose whatever way he or she pleases to complete the tasks and goals assigned. The divisional structure within Chipotle is coordinated by standardization and a formalization that is in place. Basically, each level of management is very clear on the activities required by them because they are usually the same duties repeated over and over. Some duties may be scheduled daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly. Regardless of the schedule they repeat like a cycle. This standardization also makes it possible for the organization to compare and contrast reports and activities by district and regionally. The statistics and results of these reports and the comparisons give top management information needed to make important decisions for the company as a whole or divisionally. Each division and each business function within the company has clear procedures, and because rules and regulations are clearly written within policies the organization’s formal management can evaluate the performance of both. The divisional structure requires great communication skills. Chipotle is also a centralized organization where all decisions are made with the top level of management. Management is required to communicate these decisions, goals, and tasks downward to the destined level of management where implementation takes place. If these ideas and tasks were not communicated correctly poor performance and failure may occur. This may also occur if the information communicated upwards the chain of command is incorrect or ignored. The marketing department relies on information regarding the regions in which operations take place when making decisions and completing the tasks assigned to that function of the company. Operations has the biggest effect on the organizations decisions; therefore, dividing these operations into regions became important when the company grew larger outside of its own region. An organization must consider the facts that defines and describes itself. Factors like the business it conducts, the size and number of employees it has, and the locations in which it facilitates business will determine the type of structure needed. The success of the business depends on the structure built within the organization. Everyone in the entire organization needs to clearly understand the position they have and the responsibilities expected of them. An organizational chart serves exactly that purpose. Chipotle’s divisional structure maps out a wide span of control where fewer levels of reporting exist. Fortunately this divisional structure has turned out to be well chosen for Chipotle. Clearly Steve Ells, Founder, Chairman, and co-CEO knows exactly what he wants and needs from his organization. This reporting system has given him a competive edge. And, this knowledge has led him to great success. Once upon a time he owned a single location in Colorado and now there are Chipotle locations around the globe. Communication works well when it is mapped out correctly.

Depression is currently the number one mental disorder in the world, as well as one of the leading causes of years lived with disability (Hales Lauzon, pp.58, 2012). It does not only alter the way you think but it also alters the way you feel, your social behavior and your physical wellness (Hales Lauzon, 2012). According to Hales and Lauzon (pp. 58 – 59, 2012), the onset age for depression is during adolescence. In Canada, 8% adults will experience depression and 15% – 40% of college students who are at the age of 18 – 24 are likely to suffer depression (Hales Lauzon, pp.58 – 59, 2012). As someone who has suffered through depression, this topic piques my interest. It reminds me of a myth prevalent in modern day society: consumption of marijuana decreases depression symptoms. In this research essay, I will begin by defining depression and its symptoms. Then, I will evaluate whether consumption of marijuana has a positive or a negative effect on depression.
